The recent weather conditions in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have caused widespread devastation and loss of life. According to the provincial government, at least 40 people have died and more than 1000 have been displaced since December due to heavy rains, floods and landslides. The worst affected areas are the eThekwini, uMgungundlovu and uMkhanyakude districts.
The provincial disaster management team has been working around the clock to provide relief and assistance to the affected communities. The team has also been conducting assessments and repairs of the damaged infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, schools and clinics. The provincial government has allocated R200 million for the emergency response and recovery efforts.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that more rain is expected in the coming days, especially along the coast and in the northern parts of the province. The SAWS has urged residents to exercise caution and avoid low-lying areas, river crossings and steep slopes. The SAWS has also advised people to monitor the weather forecasts and alerts regularly.
The provincial government has expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and its solidarity with the survivors. It has also thanked the various stakeholders, such as the national government, municipalities, NGOs, faith-based organisations and volunteers, for their support and cooperation. The provincial government has appealed to the public to donate any items that can help the affected communities, such as food, water, blankets, clothing and hygiene products.
