It was a day to remember for three law enforcement officers in Cape Town who helped a woman in labour to deliver her baby on a gravel road near Sunningdale on Friday morning. The officers were on patrol when they received a call from their control room about a woman who had gone into labour on Rivergate Road, a gravel road with no street lights or nearby facilities.
The officers arrived at the scene and found the woman lying on the ground, surrounded by her husband and two other women. They quickly assessed the situation and realised that the baby was about to be born. They called for an ambulance and tried to comfort the woman as they prepared for the delivery.
One of the officers, who had some experience in delivering babies, took charge and instructed his colleagues on what to do. He also used his cellphone flashlight to provide some light in the dark. With his guidance, the officers successfully delivered a healthy baby boy and wrapped him in a blanket. They also cut the umbilical cord and tied it with a shoelace.
The officers were overjoyed and relieved when they heard the baby cry. They congratulated the parents and waited for the ambulance to arrive. The mother and the baby were then taken to a nearby hospital for further care.
The City of Cape Town praised the officers for their quick response and professionalism in assisting the woman and her baby. The City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said he was very proud of the officers who went beyond their call of duty and showed compassion and care.
“This is not something that our officers encounter every day, but they handled it with aplomb. I commend them for their bravery and resourcefulness in what must have been a very stressful situation. They are a credit to our organisation and an inspiration to us all,” Smith said.
The officers said they were happy to have been part of such a special moment and wished the family all the best.
