South Africa’s opening batsman Dean Elgar scored a magnificent century to help his team fight back against India on the second day of the second Test in Johannesburg. Elgar’s 127 off 207 balls was his 14th Test hundred and his fourth against India. He shared a 117-run stand with Rassie van der Dussen (67) for the third wicket as South Africa reached 292 for 5 at stumps, trailing India by 118 runs.
Elgar showed great resilience and determination as he faced a hostile Indian pace attack on a challenging pitch. He was hit on the helmet twice by Jasprit Bumrah, but he did not let that affect his concentration, and played some fluent strokes on both sides of the wicket, especially against the spinners. He reached his century with a six over long-on off Ravichandran Ashwin.
Elgar’s knock was crucial for South Africa, who were in trouble at 37 for 2 after India had posted 410 in their first innings. India’s captain Virat Kohli scored a brilliant 150, while Ajinkya Rahane (79) and Cheteshwar Pujara (50) also made valuable contributions. India’s bowlers then struck early, with Bumrah dismissing Aiden Markram for 8 and Mohammed Shami removing Keegan Petersen for 7.
However, Elgar and van der Dussen steadied the ship with a solid partnership. They batted with patience and skill, rotating the strike and punishing the loose balls. They took South Africa to 154 for 2 at tea, before India fought back with three wickets in the final session. Ashwin broke the stand by trapping van der Dussen lbw, while Bumrah got rid of Temba Bavuma (12) and Quinton de Kock (0) in quick succession.
Elgar was still unbeaten at the close of play, along with Wiaan Mulder (18*). He will hope to extend his innings and reduce the deficit as much as possible on the third day. South Africa will need him to bat long and deep if they want to challenge India’s total and level the series.
Elgar’s ton was a masterclass of Test batting in tough conditions. He showed why he is one of the best openers in the world and a leader of his team. He has given South Africa a chance to counter attack India and make this a thrilling contest.
