If you are a dstv subscriber, you might want to brace yourself for some bad news. The satellite TV service provider has announced that it will increase its prices from next month, citing inflation and currency fluctuations as the main reasons.
According to a statement released by dstv, the price hike will affect all its packages, ranging from 5% to 15%. This means that the cheapest package, Access, will go from R110 to R115 per month, while the most expensive package, Premium, will go from R829 to R949 per month.
Dstv said that the price adjustment was necessary to maintain the quality and variety of its content, as well as to cover the rising costs of production, transmission and licensing. The company also claimed that it had absorbed some of the inflationary pressures in the past year, and that it still offered value for money compared to other entertainment options.
However, not everyone is convinced by dstv’s explanation. Some customers have expressed their frustration and disappointment on social media, saying that they are already paying too much for a service that often repeats the same shows and movies. Some have also threatened to cancel their subscriptions and switch to other platforms, such as Netflix, Showmax or YouTube.
Dstv is not the only pay-TV operator that has increased its prices recently. Earlier this year, StarTimes and OpenView also announced price hikes, citing similar reasons as dstv. This has raised concerns about the affordability and accessibility of pay-TV in South Africa, especially for low-income households.
