If you live in Gauteng, you might have noticed the sudden drop in temperature this week. This cold snap is not only affecting your comfort, but also your electricity supply. City Power, the municipal entity that provides electricity to Johannesburg, has warned that the increased demand for power due to the cold weather could lead to outages and load shedding.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that the utility was experiencing high network faults and power interruptions as a result of the cold front. He urged residents to use electricity sparingly and switch off non-essential appliances. He also advised customers to report any power failures or faults to the City Power call centre or via the mobile app.
Mangena said that City Power was working closely with Eskom, the national power utility, to ensure that there was enough generation capacity to meet the demand. He said that City Power had contingency plans in place to deal with any emergencies or breakdowns. He assured customers that City Power was doing everything possible to keep the lights on during this challenging period.
City Power also reminded customers to be vigilant and safe when using alternative sources of heating, such as gas heaters, candles, paraffin stoves and generators. These devices can pose a fire hazard or cause carbon monoxide poisoning if not used properly. Customers should also avoid illegal connections and meter tampering, as these can cause damage to the network and endanger lives.
